“…This is the solstice,
the still point of the sun,
its cusp and midnight,
the year’s threshold and unlocking,
where the past lets go of
and becomes the future;
the place of caught breath,
the door of a vanished house
left ajar…”

Solstice Bright Blessings!
As the year’s wheel turns to the Winter Solstice, we can be guided by and align with ancient traditions, the energy of the sacred Goddess, and the enduring significance of the season.
Approaching the Winter Solstice and Yule days is a blessing. These December days are our soul’s sanctuary, where we ritually recalibrate, rest in stillness, let go, and welcome our future.
On December 21, the alchemy of winter solstice envelops the world in a brief period of darkness—the longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Astronomically, the winter solstice marks the end of fall and the beginning of winter.
As our planet stands upon a precipice of a magical moment, the Winter Solstice is a potent reminder of the alchemy of life, death, and renewal. This special time of the winter solstice offers us an extraordinary opportunity to pause, reflect, and prepare our hearts for the beautiful awakening ahead as we gently move toward brighter days.
In this post, I’ll explore the benefits of Mother Night’s darkness and the Sacred Feminine on the eve of the Winter Solstice. I’ll also guide you through a Winter Solstice Alchemy Ritual using Flower Essence Aromatherapy. This ritual invites us to pause and reflect on our inner selves, welcoming the Sun’s birth into the next cycle of our lives.
Traditions That Connect
Today’s solstice traditions arose from pre-history celebrations welcoming the “birth of the sun.” Various cultures have honored the winter solstice for millennia with rites and rituals, emphasizing its profound meaning and widespread hope in people’s lives. This remarkable moment, when the Sun appears to stand still, is a time for spiritual connection, ritual, and rejuvenation.
Some of our ancestor’s traditions survive to the present day. Although each tradition is rich in history and meaning, Winter Solstice offers a unique perspective as people around the globe come alive with vibrant celebrations honoring this celestial event. For example, people gather in the darkness around bonfires, storytelling, dancing, and feasting in merriment, finding comfort in each other’s company.
Winter Solstice highlights the diverse ways in which we observe this significant moment. It reveals a shared connection to nature’s magical cycles.
In modern Goddess traditions, the Winter Solstice continues to be when we honor the Sacred Feminine through Mother’s Night. In many ways, we see her as the ‘mother’ bearer of light as she holds us in the darkness, urging us onward. Her deep and powerful magic endures today.
No doubt, our traditions help us connect with others and with the past. They tell the story of our origins and remind us of the aspects that help shape our lives. The symbols and the celebrations remind us that even through the darkness, life persists. So we repeat them.
Transforming With the Sacred
To She who leads us into the cave of our own darkness
and brings us back into the light of our true being.
A beautiful transformation is quietly unfolding in the solstice darkness.
You might not see it immediately, but something compelling is taking shape within the depths of yourself. Your spirit and nature are transforming like the Earth during the Solstice.
Even though life appears quiet to the outside world, there’s movement. With its tranquil stillness and enveloping shadows, the Sacred beckons us into a profound realm of fruitful darkness.
Solstice invites us on a beautiful journey to pause and transform our inner shadows into light. A journey through the spiral encourages conscious awareness of your current state, allowing you to identify areas for transformation and actively work towards them.
As we consciously link our awareness to nature’s cycles, our understanding of our personal and collective growth begins to deepen. In the process, we become much closer to the here and now than to where we are going next.
We can use the Solstice to reflect on experiences and lessons learned over the past year. Integrating that must be integrated and find renewal, revealing our strengths and resilience.
Gifts of Winter Darkness
“Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness.
It took me years to understand that this too, was a gift.”
―Mary Oliver
Reflecting on Mary Oliver’s wisdom, I understand our human challenges in recognizing gifts born from darkness, which often emerge from the shadows of our psyche.
Before electric lights brightened our lives, moonlight, starlight, and fire were the only illuminations. Can you imagine living in a time when being constrained by darkness influenced our perspective of the world around us?
As with nature, our human potential requires time in darkness. Our alchemical task is not to turn darkness into light but to learn to accept and integrate its gifts. We naturally spend more time inside in the days of growing darkness.
Winter is an excellent time for self-exploration and care. Developing a deeper understanding of ourselves and implementing healthy self-care habits can improve vitality.
In winter, everything lies dormant in the silent Earth. This time of stillness, from which our soul’s yearnings and new inspirations can eventually emerge, is essential for our evolution.
Mother’s Night – The Dark Goddess Archetype
The night before the Winter Solstice is when the Great Mother goes into labor to birth or rebirth the Sun, which is why we call it Mother Night. In this sense, Mother’s Night brings to focus a sense of the Dark Goddess, the sacred feminine portal of death/rebirth or renewal. We learn the true essence of light through acceptance and immersion in the dark.
Mother Night is observed in honor of the Dark Goddess, who holds us at our beginnings and endings.
As we seek to reconnect with our roots and find meaning in ancient traditions, Mother’s Night offers a unique opportunity to celebrate the Sacred Feminine and acknowledge the cycle of life, death, and rebirth symbolized by the changing seasons.
Depending on your beliefs, we can call in the archetype of the Dark Goddess to honor the space of Mother’s Night so that we may know ourselves. Goddess traditions of the Northern Hemisphere honor the darkness, revering it as “a source and symbol of deep wisdom.”
The Dark Goddess archetype rules over everything we fear most. Some fear that working with her will bring out the darkest or worst aspects of themselves. She can sometimes be terrifying, and her lessons can be painful. Engaging with the dark Goddess, you may face things about yourself that you would rather ignore and deny.
On Mother’s Night, the Dark Goddess stands by your side. She serves as our guide and healer, embodying the benevolent force that illuminates our darkest moments and is the face we embrace when yearning for renewal.
Asking her to join you on your path during the longest night is ultimately one of healing. Her blessing offers us wisdom in exchange for ignorance. She opens her arms to hold us in alchemical darkness and stillness, where the sacred seeds of our potential may gestate. It is the womb from which promise or light will emerge.
Do Not Fear What you Cannot See
Being “in the dark,” literally and metaphorically, means not knowing what’s next and not having a clear direction. By facing the darkness and sitting with ourselves, we enter an alchemical space where we can safely confront and shed old patterns and emerge with fresh perspectives.
Darkness asks us to slow down, listen, feel what’s around us, and tap into our bodies. Most of the time, we are afraid to welcome change into our lives and finally release the things buried deep within our souls.
However, the fear that the dark corner one hesitates to turn toward might hold a mirror and that the monstrous figure glimpsed in that mirror could be oneself will keep us from looking. Holding still in darkness, whether it is the longest night or when we face ourselves, we cultivate the virtues of courage and patience. We don’t shrink from what we cannot see.
Entering the “darkness” represents a symbolic journey into the subconscious, where one confronts their shadow aspects, experiences profound transformation, and emerges with renewed strength and wisdom from the seemingly frightening depths of the unknown.
When we understand the present, we can make better decisions about the future. Identifying attachments and resolving our habits requires courage to come to terms with ourselves. Acknowledging, letting go, processing, and integrating what we have previously avoided makes room for something new.
We transform our relationship with our inner perceptions by shedding any denials and contempt we may hold in exchange for respect, compassion, and understanding. We take refuge in the power of forgiveness for ourselves and others, which allows us to welcome the new and gives us hope in life’s potential.
In doing so, we give to ourselves and embrace what resides outside the soul’s spotlight, bringing it into full awareness and harmony with the rest of ourselves. Ultimately, transforming our perceived inadequacies into the gold of personal power is an alchemical process of giving self-acceptance and compassion.
Deep within the darkness, the light of a brand new year is lit.
Where The Past Lets Go
“The longest night gifts us with time to enter the darkness fully.
We hold our breaths with nature, where life is suspended, waiting in extremis.
The stillness behind action gathers as we empty and trust in our renewal.
What will you give/lose to the night?”
–Oak Chezart
I love this question: “What will you give/lose to the night?”
If we accept that we are a dualistic conundrum of light and dark, we are perfect mirrors of nature. Light and darkness, the two polarities of the universe, weave in and out of our lives and through ourselves.
At its heart, the sweet spot between giving and losing lies in the suspension of life and its reciprocity. The paradox is that most people are blinded by a quest for a light that confirms their brilliance. However, we don’t become enlightened by repressing the unconscious parts of ourselves.
Humans have an innate need to give meaning to their lives, which can be achieved by setting intentional goals and working to achieve them. Giving to others can also be a way to find meaning and can lead to a sense of value and affirmation from others.
To lose means to no longer have something because it has been misplaced or taken away, either accidentally or purposefully, or because we failed to retain it.
If what we lose is intentional, we can reframe the action as giving.
We give to ourselves by pausing for reflection, engaging in rituals, and permitting necessary transformations.
We nurture ourselves by embracing boundaries, committing to a healthy lifestyle, and prioritizing self-care.
These actions protect our mental health, give us a sense of well-being, and help us become more mindful as we evolve.
When giving is joyful, unconditional, and from the heart, the energy behind it increases manifold. By being willing to give what you seek, you will keep the universe’s abundance circulating in your life.

Greeting the Dawn of a New Day, a New Season, a New You!
As we welcome the dawn of a new day, we attune ourselves to our inner and outer landscapes’ wisdom, fresh perspective, and delight.
- Greet the sunrise: Rise early on the solstice morning to witness the first rays of the Sun. Invite the light rays to penetrate your eyes and heart, filling you with a beautiful warmth.
- Hold your palms out, stretched toward the Sun’s rays.
- Invoke:
“The sun returns! The light returns!
The earth begins to warm once more!
The time of darkness has passed,
and a path of light begins the new day.
Welcome, welcome, the heat of the sun,
blessing us all with its rays.”
Consider the following activities:
- Set Intentions for the Coming Year: Start a journal to document your hopes and aspirations for the coming year. Ask for clarity in your dreams, whether they concern goals, healing, or guidance.
- Bring light and warmth into your home: Light candles or build a fire to emulate the Sun’s rays, reflecting on the light within yourself and your community.
- Share a meal: Prepare and share a nourishing meal with your loved ones, celebrating the bounty and warmth of human connection.
As we welcome the gradual return of daylight this winter, let’s carry the spirit of the Solstice within us. Pay it forward by visualizing a loved one, a family member, or a friend, and send them feelings of loving kindness and appreciation.
Let’s remember the enduring cycle of life and the ever-present hope that the past transformed becomes the future.
Personal Growth is Inclusive of ALL
We must not succumb to the temptation to show up in the old ways and force things back to what is comfortable. The sacred feminine within guides us to a new and better story—the opportunity to rise and serve from the lightness of our hearts.
As we heal and love ourselves, others will follow to create a ripple effect that encourages them to see possibilities.
With each story shared and each experience embraced, more people will recognize that we are genuinely aligned with the alchemical forces of nature. This transformation unfolds gradually, one person at a time, as we inspire and uplift those around us.
Gifts of Spiritual Significance From the Winter Solstice
The winter solstice is more than an astronomical event; it’s a time for introspection and renewal. What we intentionally give is never lost.
The Sacred invites us to reconnect with our inner world and the natural rhythms of living in harmony with nature. We set intentions, release what no longer serves our highest calling, and embrace the energy potential of the slowly returning light.
The Winter Solstice signifies a moment of stillness. It allows us to pause, reflect, and renew. The alchemical journey of crossing the Solstice threshold with awareness of our past and a vision for the future unveils unparalleled possibilities.
Yule Blessings
The Winter Solstice is the shortest day, but it’s also the moment the Sun begins to grow again.
As we welcome Yule, it is also a time to create good memories with family and community and cultivate a sense of belonging.
Winter is meant to be a profoundly nourishing season. It is intended to nurture and restore you, ground you, and calm your nervous system through nourishing rest. Call it hibernation, gestation, or liminal space—we must heed its call.
Now is the time to rest, dream, and receive new information and ideas. The coming year reveals itself when you turn inward. The dreams you dream in winter are the sparks of new life planted now. They will grow in the year ahead.
The growing light serves as a metaphor for the slow but sure progress winter represents. Growth that is steady, enduring, and rooted in intention. Remember that you are always connected to the Sacred, the source of your inner light.
In these quiet moments of winter, we remember that, like the Earth, we are part of a more significant cycle of alchemical transformation and renewal in which the past becomes the future.
May the Winter Solstice provide you with a fresh start, renewed hope, and the clarity to move forward on your path with integrity and intention.
All my aromatic love,
Vidya
