What a year 2025 has been.
I, for one, am ready to put 2025 behind me and welcome a new year, once again filled with promise and hope.
I’m reflecting on the profound, soul-enriching hope that guides us through life’s darkest moments and keeps us believing in dawns we have yet to witness.
Whether caring for loved ones, adjusting to an empty nest, reimagining purpose, facing health issues, or questioning what’s next, keeping hope alive is crucial during life’s threshold moments.
This past year has inspired me to step back and take actions that nurture my spirit, paving the way for my aspirations to flourish.
Life’s journey is a beautiful tapestry of thrilling peaks and poignant valleys, where extraordinary new possibilities and heartfelt goodbyes weave our narratives.
I genuinely hope you took a moment to welcome the cozy charm of winter—those longer nights illuminated by gentle lights, fostering warmth, laughter, and joy in your heart.

Hope is a predictor of enhanced wellbeing across all age groups. In my role as a mental health counsellor, a recurring theme in my sessions is the message of Hope.
After all, hope motivates my clients to seek help, believing that situations can improve, suffering can lessen, challenges can be overcome, change is possible, and a happier, healthier life can be achieved.
Hopelessness is a core feature of depression. Research consistently shows an inverse relationship between hope and depressive symptoms. As hope increases, depression decreases.
Hope truly captivates me because it uniquely emerges from challenges and uncertainty. This optimistic human quality is driving transformation across fields, including medicine, psychology, therapy, education, meditation, and even the science of longevity.
A cornerstone of wellbeing, hope is a vital active practice that supports mental health at the individual and family levels. It helps us maintain an optimistic view of the world and our path to a brighter future.
Understanding Hope: More Than an Emotion
Although hope often feels deeply emotional, it is essential to recognize that hope itself is not an emotion. Instead, hope is a mindset or a state of being. It inspires us to believe in the potential for improvement, the ability to conquer challenges, the promise of change, and the pursuit of a happier, healthier life.
This distinction is significant because it means that hope is not merely something you feel—it is something you can learn and develop over time.
Hope also differs from simply making a wish. When you hope, you are actively working toward a goal, taking steps within your control. In contrast, a wish is passive and typically depends on factors beyond your control.
Therefore, hope blends positive emotions with the belief and planning necessary to create a better future. This combination fosters a powerful emotional connection, motivating individuals to persist even in the face of uncertainty.
A Pathway to Achievement

Science has repeatedly demonstrated that hope not only makes us feel better but can also help us succeed.
Like optimism —seeing the glass as half full —hope is about asking how to fill the glass—engaging with challenges and seeking solutions.
As a verb, hope is proactive. It is the belief that the future can be better than the present and that you have the ability (agency) to create that change. It means taking responsibility for personal goals and actively working toward them. It embodies the conviction that positive outcomes are achievable and that your actions can help make them happen, even if success is not guaranteed.
At its core, hope is characterized by a willingness and an identification of pathways. Pathways are the specific plans you develop to reach your goals.
If your first pathway doesn’t work, stay engaged to find a new one. People with high hope understand that obstacles are inevitable and that achieving their goals often requires multiple attempts.

The Value of Hope

Both a virtue and a value, hope’s positive impact on human life is widely recognized and difficult to ignore. It often appears in unexpected circumstances. Even in our most profound grief, when we feel powerless and vulnerable in the face of suffering and tragedy, there is always hope patiently waiting for us.
Remarkably, hope doesn’t happen in isolation; it occurs in social connection. Our connectedness with each other is the single best predictor of hope.
When we orient ourselves toward hope, we take actions that align with our most hopeful lives. This effect resonates across our communities, causing people close to us to embody hope as well.
The Breath of Hope

By now, you’ve probably realized just how passionately I emphasize the importance of breath. It’s something I apply to myself and teach my clients to harness. I genuinely believe we can use it as a tool to regulate and soothe body, mind, and spirit.
Our breath is the portal to our wellbeing. We should breathe how we want to live—with full, deep breaths. If we breathe shallow and pressured, this is how we will live. If we fill ourselves up, savor our breath, and release it with grace, we’ll live in this fashion.
Consciously focusing on our breathing transforms our nervous system from the fight-or-flight response to a calming state. This decisive shift not only reduces stress but also promotes better digestion, enhances sleep, and elevates our overall wellbeing.
Breathing in hope with each inhalation reminds us of its availability—and necessity for all of us.
The Psychospiritual Power of Scent
Scent has long been recognized as one of the most profound senses connected to memory, emotion, and spiritual awareness. Be a Beacon of Hope for Others
Allow yourself to embody hope and serve as a beacon for others. To be hopeful matters – it spreads to everyone around us, like passing a flame from one candle to another.
In fact, hope, like light, can be that much more exquisite and meaningful when it comes with full acknowledgment that darkness exists, too.
In the words of the late Leonard Cohen, in his song Anthem:
“Ring the bells that still can ring.
Forget your perfect offering.

That’s how the light gets in.”

As we welcome the new year, now is an excellent time to map what comes next. Say “yes” to conscious living.
