Description
This Ritual Essence was made at the Ikaika Wahine shrine, a remnant of a sacred heiau at the Paleaku Peace Sanctuary Botanical Gardens in south Kona. Ikaika wahine means “strong, powerful woman.” Through her potent rainbow (anuenue) heart, all are welcome here.
This beautiful and serene sanctuary offers an extraordinary promise of bringing together universal non-sectarian spirituality, inclusive of all the world’s cultural and spiritual traditions. Among the numerous shrines representing the major religions, including Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Native American, and ancient Hawai’ian traditions, there is sizeable walking labyrinth is another tribute to the respect and balance of beliefs exemplified in the gardens.
The site sits on a 3,300-year-old lava flow that runs through the property containing lava tubes and natural caverns. One sacred grotto, adjacent to the Ikaika Wahine shrine, contains petroglyphs (rock drawings) estimated to be 800 years old. The petroglyphs, primarily “triangle people,” depict the lineage of medicine people believed to have lived here.
For the ancient Hawai’ians, the heiau (temple) is a place of worship where mana (sacred energy) is transferred and concentrated through rituals and prayers traditionally offered to honor the ‘aumākua’ or guardians of the land at Paleaku.
