“No one outside ourselves can rule us inwardly. When we know this, we become free.” –Buddha

Happy 4th of July!

On July 4, we celebrate American independence with themes of resilience, hope, and freedom. As we celebrate the birth of our nation, I would like to take a moment to reflect on freedom—not only the liberty we cherish in our country but also the freedom, hope, and resilience we can cultivate in our own lives.

For nearly 250 years, the United States has served as a beacon of freedom and hope for the world. Our country has evolved from a mere concept into an unparalleled powerhouse, a transformation that would have been unimaginable to those in the 18th century. Yet, our country has evolved in ways that the founders could never have envisioned.

As our country navigates this unparalleled time of fundamental change, I want to remind you that it is the freedom to feel vibrant, energized, and connected—the freedom to laugh, love, and live fully—that is each person’s birthright. The pursuit of freedom and equality remains a continuous process.

Traditionally, Americans celebrate our country together with our neighbors, friends, and family, all of whom share a connection to the principles outlined in the Declaration of Independence.

In this post, I delve into the powerful themes of resilience, hope, and freedom, illustrating how they are deeply woven into the very fabric of our nation’s identity. I share the benefits of using Fleur’s signature flower essence aromatherapy tools that can significantly boost your resilience, ignite a sense of hope, and empower you to fully embrace your freedom.

The American Drive Towards Greatness

We are a nation of ambitious individuals who relentlessly pursue our dreams and strive for excellence. The American people are the cornerstone of the nation’s strength and vitality, contributing to its ongoing success. Our united passion and unwavering commitment to fostering meaningful connections distinguish us as an extraordinary nation on the global stage.

We have much to be proud of. Our country was founded on the principle of religious freedom, but not as a Christian nation. The Founding Fathers enshrined this principle in the Constitution, ensuring the separation of church and state and guaranteeing the free exercise of religion for all citizens. This separation prevents the government from establishing a state religion or interfering with individuals’ religious practices.

Our drive towards creating “a perfect union,” as stated in the Preamble of the U.S. Constitution, represents the ongoing commitment of ‘we the people’ to improve the nation and its government. Although the text suggests that while our country may never be perfect, we should aim for improvement through the well-being of its citizens and the protection of liberty.

200 Years of Consistent and Unwavering Growth

In the last century, the United States has achieved remarkable success in various fields, including academia, science, innovation, finance, and sports. These accomplishments have highlighted our strength and leadership on the global stage.

Groundbreaking technologies and innovations exist thanks to the visionary inventors and entrepreneurs who boldly paved the way for progress. These remarkable advancements include modern aviation, the internet, computers, smartphones, revolutionary breakthroughs in medicine, and now AI. All of these developments have profoundly transformed our lives and the world around us. Even our language is changing, reflecting our evolving cultural perspectives.

Although we often take for granted the freedoms we enjoy, which allow us to pursue the incredible advancements that have transformed our lives. Our greatness is enhanced by the diverse nature of our democratic tradition, which recognizes that every individual has inherent rights that cannot be violated. As a nation, we evolve and express progressive ideas while tackling global conflicts. Active political and civic engagement is essential for a healthy democracy, enabling citizens to participate in public life and hold their leaders accountable.

Our Enduring Symbol of Freedom

The Statue of Liberty is a lasting symbol of freedom and democracy. It stands as a powerful beacon of inspiration, embodying the timeless ideals of liberty and justice.

Inscribed on a plaque at its base, Lazarus’s poignant poem The New Colossus beautifully conveys this sentiment through its celebrated lines, inviting all who gaze upon it to reflect on the enduring promise of hope and freedom.

“Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Over the years, the Statue of Liberty has welcomed countless immigrants seeking safety and new opportunities. It has witnessed significant moments in American history, including both World Wars and the September 11 attacks. I would also include the January 6 attack on our Capitol by politically motivated insurrectionists.

The 4th of July is a time to recognize the sacrifices made for liberty and appreciate the freedoms we have. Despite facing governmental challenges and the increasing rise of authoritarianism, the U.S. remains a land of hope and opportunity, where individuals can pursue their goals and aspirations. Hope is not merely passive wishing; it is an active, motivating force that inspires people to take concrete steps toward achieving their objectives.

The Spirit of Independence

The most enduring lines of the Declaration of Independence come from its preamble:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that their Creator endows them with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Ultimately, the spirit of independence continues to shape American identity, influencing how we view ourselves, our government, and our role in the world. In essence, the American spirit is defined by a persistent dedication to the principles of freedom, a commitment to individual liberty, and a belief in the power of self-governance.

Our capacity for independence to influence and shape our lives comes from making informed choices. We advocate for a more humane society grounded in the spirit of not only independence but also interdependence, embracing the balance of reason and free inquiry. This viewpoint supports efforts to create a more inclusive society, emphasizing the equitable development of human capabilities and societal harmony.

Our Common Thread that Unites Us

The common thread that unites us as Americans is our diversity. Many of us have family members who were not originally born in the United States, reflecting our immigrant roots. Our diversity is meaningless without unity; we must harness and celebrate our strengths to fully appreciate our shared humanity. This “common thread” also represents the core values and ideals that all Americans share, such as freedom, opportunity, and equality.

The United States is a complex society with multiple political, social, and cultural dimensions. It has a rich history and a diverse population, both of which contribute to American heritage. This complexity powerfully emphasizes the profound impact that Indigenous cultures and European colonization have wielded in shaping the essence of American identity. However, individuals may interpret and apply these values in differing ways.

There is no doubt that our relationships with one another enrich our lives. We all wish to live in peace and have the freedom to pursue opportunities that improve our lives. The communities we belong to often reflect our values and beliefs. Our country was built by immigrants, shaped by resistance, and blessed by wild lands that still whisper healing. We celebrate the tapestry of cultures, pearls of wisdom, and ecosystems that make America beautiful.

Vibing Together

Most of us share a deep connection with others in our society. We interact socially with individuals in our families and at our workplaces. We gather in sacred spaces. The process by which individuals fully integrate into the social structure involves building relationships, engaging in social interactions, and developing a sense of belonging within the community.

Social integration is crucial for creating a stable, safe, and just society for all its members, where equal rights are upheld and law and order are maintained. Our American social structure is a vital foundation that nurtures and amplifies our ability to express ourselves while inspiring us to freely actualize our dreams.

Thus, they say, “It takes a village,” and I am incredibly grateful for mine! My vibrant network not only encourages my individuality but also cultivates profound connections among us, deepening our understanding and appreciation of one another. Furthermore, I am inspired by the courageous and innovative contributions that we embody and others make, which help all of us evolve in a positive direction.

Humanistic Values Promote Connection

I recently saw a news story featuring an interview with a teacher who had a poster with this phrase welcoming students to her middle school classroom. The educational board requested that she remove it because it failed to align with their ideas of who was welcome. She stood firm in her refusal, unyielding in her conviction. Ultimately, the school board was forced to yield to her determination. Her unwavering courage to stand her ground emphasized humanistic principles. This event conveyed a powerful message that resonated deeply across the entire community and beyond.

The inviting phrase “Everyone is Welcome Here” effectively creates a sense of belonging and invites participation from people of all backgrounds. The classroom serves as a welcoming sanctuary for learning, celebrating, and embracing individuals from diverse backgrounds, identities, and beliefs.

As an integrative therapist, I acknowledge my bias toward humanistic qualities in individuals who weave their lives together with ours. I strive to create a world where everyone—regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability—is included and valued. I believe in the inherent goodness of individuals, emphasizing the value and dignity of each human being, the significance of free will, and the potential for growth and self-actualization. Key traits that I value include acceptance, empathy, understanding, compassion, self-awareness, and a commitment to personal responsibility and autonomy.

We are Wired for Kindness

Kindness is not only a personal virtue but also a vital human value that fosters a more compassionate, equitable, and thriving world. As a species, we care about the well-being of others and recognize that our ability to thrive depends on how well we interact with one another.

The human brain is remarkable and possesses a powerful social caregiving system intricately regulated by the hormone oxytocin. This encourages feelings of kindness and compassion in both women and men. It involves a conscious effort to be helpful, considerate, cooperative, and caring, both for ourselves and for others.

Oxytocin is primarily produced in the hypothalamus and released into the bloodstream by the pituitary gland. When activated, this system fosters feelings of connection, trust, and bonding between individuals. This hormone is essential for developing relationships and emphasizing the biological basis of our social interactions. Our acts of kindness can create a ripple effect, inspiring generosity in those around us.

More Alike than Different

I believe that readers will agree that humanistic values reflect our shared ethical and philosophical principles. A humanistic mindset emphasizes human agency, reason, and the importance of personal experience in shaping one’s values and understanding of life’s meaning.

If you are like me, you value the freedom to think for yourself and pursue what you love. A commitment to personal growth encourages positive relationships and instills a sense of purpose in life. Our collective growth must also ensure safety in pursuing these goals. These qualities empower everyone to lead fulfilling lives and contribute to a better world.

It is noteworthy that while America is perceived as a land of plenty, many still experience unease and discontent due to increasing economic challenges and social inequalities. As citizens, we are confronting an unprecedented abuse of government power. The rise in political violence is a growing concern globally, with implications for democracy and social stability.

We are faced with the alarming reality of ‘disappearing’ citizens and immigrants, a blatant disregard for our laws, and the decline of essential social and health services. Shockingly, criminals are undermining the integrity of our government, posing a serious threat to democracy’s very foundation as well as our economic strength and leadership on the world stage. In response to these challenges, we are called to embody key pro-democratic principles that can help us navigate this complex situation together.

Resilience, Hope & Freedom

The themes of resilience, hope, and freedom are intertwined in the celebration of American independence. These concepts empower and uplift one another, particularly in the context of overcoming adversity and striving for positive change.

Resilience serves as the foundation of freedom. Our nation’s pursuit of freedom demonstrates resilience in the face of adversity, showcasing both individual and collective strength in overcoming obstacles. Our capacity to recover from challenges is rooted in hope, which embodies optimism and the anticipation of a brighter future.

Hope is a word that carries immense expectation and longing. Such a small word bears the weight of people’s desire for something better to come. Hope is a powerful force that embodies an unwavering belief in a bright future, fueled by optimism and the conviction that positive possibilities await us. It can help individuals cope with difficult situations and maintain a positive outlook even in the face of adversity.

Freedom, or individual liberty, is the ability of a person to make their own choices and decisions without unnecessary external constraints, especially those imposed by the government or other powerful entities. Having the power to envision the future you want to live in and harnessing the capability to turn that vision into reality is your birthright.

The American Charters of Freedom have secured the rights of the American people for more than two and a quarter centuries. They are considered instrumental to the founding and philosophy of the United States. These foundational documents—The Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights—form the bedrock of our nation’s principles and freedoms. These documents ensure that freedom of thought, speech, religion, movement, and the right to own property are protected. They form a bulwark against tyranny.

Resilience nurtures hope, and hope drives the quest for freedom. This message inspires all of humanity in their pursuit of peace, freedom, and compassion, extending beyond just Americans and their future.

Empowering a Resilient Mindset

A resilient mindset comprises several key qualities that enable individuals to recover from adversity and maintain their overall well-being. These qualities include emotional regulation, problem-solving skills, strong social connections, a positive outlook, self-compassion, and adaptability to change. Additionally, having a sense of purpose and competence contributes to resilience.

A resilient mindset allows us to see obstacles as opportunities for growth. Rather than succumbing to despair or giving up, we choose to face adversity, believing that challenges can lead to both personal and collective progress. As we confront real-life issues such as climate change, extreme weather events, and shifting populations, the impact on our communities is profound.

While resilience does not eliminate problems or solve every issue we face, it empowers us to tackle challenges with proactive and effective responses. Empowering this motivates us to go beyond simply hoping for better times; it inspires us to seek creative solutions to improve our situations.

At this crucial moment, we face the significant reality of geopolitical change, both individually and collectively. We are encouraged to adopt the essential qualities of a resilient mindset. United on this journey, we will nurture resilience and strength that will empower us to overcome any challenge.

Nature Exemplifies Unyielding Resilience

When we pay attention, Nature showcases a wealth of astonishing examples that powerfully illustrate resilience. Fleur Resilience Ritual Essence embodies the resilient spirit of the Pacific Madrone, also known as the Pacific Arbutus Tree or strawberry tree. Due to their ability to withstand environmental disturbances and thrive in diverse environments, Pacific madrones are often seen as symbols of strength, survival, and resilience.

The beautiful Madron tree is renowned for its exceptional ability to regenerate following devastating disturbances such as wildfires and logging. This remarkable tree showcases the enduring strength of the natural world. With its thick, fire-resistant bark and noteworthy capacity to sprout new growth from its roots and trunk, the Madron tree defies adversity, embodying the spirit of resilience.

Its striking reddish-brown bark and lush, evergreen foliage not only enhance its aesthetic appeal but also illustrate its integral role in the ecosystems it enriches. Indeed, the Madron tree is a testament to the power of nature to overcome challenges and thrive against the odds. Its deep root system allows it to sprout new growth, enabling it to thrive in complex environments. Indigenous peoples and cultures especially cherish the adaptability of this tree.

Resilience: The Freedom to Choose Hope

Resilient Ritual Essence was created in its natural environment on a misty afternoon when a breakthrough of sunlight appeared during my meditation while I was sitting with a magnificent Madrone tree. Its essence was captured in spring water, co-created with nature, where the elements of earth, wood, water, air, sunlight, and spirit merged powerfully to create a vibrant and empowering essence. Our vibrational essence encapsulates the energetic and sacred imprint of the tree, its flowers, and its fruits, harmoniously intertwined with the vibrant Oregon Pacific coast.

Our vibrational Ritual Essence activates the natural healing resourcefulness of the human mind, tapping into its inherent ability to adapt, innovate, and find solutions, even when faced with limited resources or challenging circumstances. It empowers us to confront stress and adversity with resilience and positivity, rather than simply enduring the challenges we face. Our Ritual Essences are powerful yet gentle remedies designed to enhance the subtle and energetic dimensions of your being.

Use Resilience Ritual Essence whenever you need the courage to handle major stress, adversity, tragedy, or threats. It is also helpful when you are seeking safety, support from others, or the determination to care for yourself.

I encourage you to be intentional when incorporating Resilience Ritual Essence into your self-care routine. Add a few drops to your drinking water or apply directly to the crown of your head for maximum benefit.

Empower the power of resilience within yourself.

  • Empower yourself by focusing on the choices available to you and envisioning the future.

Honoring America’s True Spirit

As I have already stated, America’s strength lies in its diversity, resilience, and the healing traditions passed down through generations. This Independence Day, I am also celebrating the healing traditions of indigenous and immigrant communities that have enriched our collective knowledge of plant medicine, especially through the use of flower essences and essential oils.

I honor the ancestral wisdom preserved across generations and cultures, embracing the wellness traditions inspired by the gifts of our Earth. Supporting holistic wellness serves as a heartfelt tribute to those who paved the way before us and to the generations yet to come. When we prioritize our own well-being, we create a ripple effect that strengthens our communities.

In essence, “America’s true spirit of healing” is not just a single event but an ongoing journey of both individual and collective transformation. This journey requires awareness, intention, and action. It involves recognizing the interconnectedness of all things, including the protection of our natural environment,

I’m grateful for the alchemical gifts of Resilience Ritual Essence and the beautiful essential oils used to make Hope Spray. During this critical moment in our political history, they are a tremendous help to me in staying centered, maintaining positive thoughts, and remaining dedicated to my sacred purpose.

Redefining Freedom

As I write this post, I am filled with an extraordinary sense of freedom that deeply resonates with my autonomy. It’s the internal kind that serves as a profound and transformative force. I am fully aware of my power to take charge of my decisions and shape my own path. I have the freedom to make my own choices. I have

  • The freedom to create a business dedicated to helping others unlock their fullest potential.
  • The freedom to choose rest, nourishment, and pleasure without guilt,
  • The freedom to say no, without apology.
  • The freedom to change my mind, my habits, and my entire life—because they no longer fit.
  • The freedom to love who I want.
  • The freedom of written and artistic expression.
  • The freedom to actively pursue, integrate, and realize my sacred purpose.

I have repeatedly had many opportunities to reshape my understanding of freedom, discovering anew what it truly means to me.

  • Freedom from perfectionism.
  • Freedom from people-pleasing.
  • Freedom from unhealthy habits that weren’t serving me.
  • Freedom from outdated beliefs about what it means to “age gracefully” or “be a good woman.”

This freedom has come quietly—on my yoga mat, while working with a client, in a journal, at the dinner table, during a big cry, or at a decisive moment of “no more.”

My freedom is worth celebrating, and so is yours!

Living our Humanitarian Values

While I may not actively participate in political protests on the streets of our community, I have a deep respect for those who unite to bravely oppose tyranny. Their courage and solidarity inspire hope for meaningful change. They exemplify the remarkable resilience of the American people.

As a U.S. citizen, I commit to the principles of freedom during this holiday and to defending the promise we have made to our children and grandchildren. I am dedicated to building a just, healthy, and harmonious society. We must hold accountable those in office who undermine our Constitution.

I encourage you to embrace the limitless freedom that comes from choosing to live a purposeful life. Ignite a hopeful spirit and inspire yourself to seize the numerous opportunities that bring you fulfillment. Embrace your incredible ability to face challenges with courage while fostering a resilient and optimistic mindset that propels you forward with kindness.
