In this blog, my focus is on the beautiful but precious essential oil of Palo Santo, one of the essential oils used in Release Spray.
Palo Santo is one of my favorite essential oils, not only because of its sweet, woody aroma but also because of its long and fascinating history as a ceremonial plant medicine by Central and South American cultures. Through smudging practices, people traditionally use the smoke of Palo Santo for its cleansing and purifying properties in ceremonies and shamanic rituals.
Palo Santo, which means “holy wood” or “wood of the saints”, is a tree that grows on the coast of South America. This tree is related to the same botanical family as Frankincense, Myrrh, and Copal.
South American shamans teach that palo santo trees should be treated with reverence and must not be cut down. One may only harvest the wood of those trees that have naturally died and have stayed on the forest floor for several years.
Sadly, Palo Santo trees have been seriously exploited in South America. In many parts of the country where the trees once grew abundantly, the population of trees is now devastated. The preservation of the last remaining forests of this precious tree has become critical. Thankfully many environmentalists are working to repopulate the trees and educate users about the importance of maintaining Palo Santo Forests.
