“The more light you allow within you the brighter the world you live in will be.” — Shakti Gawain

Every year, there comes a special moment when it feels as though nature pauses for just an instant. The sun reaches its highest point in the sky, the day is at its longest, and the night is at its shortest.

Filled with the scent of wildflowers, nature is in full bloom; fields sway in the warm breeze, and the warmth of the air on our skin enlivens our hearts.

It reminds us that there are rhythms older than modern civilization itself. That nature follows its own cycles regardless of our calendars and schedules. And that sometimes all it takes is a walk through a meadow, gathering flowers, and watching the sunset to feel a little more connected to the world around us.

Yet the summer solstice continues to captivate us. It is more than a date on the calendar. It’s a spiritual threshold, a portal of remembrance.

Summer Solstice Happiness

It’s one of my favorite cyclical celebrations, a time of year that invites me to pause, breathe deeply, and appreciate the light! As the fullness of summer approaches, there’s a shift toward lightness and abundance.

Solstice feels like a celebration of life in its most vibrant form, a season that invites us to savor long, sun-filled days and bask in nature’s full glory. It’s no surprise that it is the season most looked forward to.

That is where the true magic of the summer solstice lies: not in spells or superstitions, but in the ability to pause and appreciate the beauty of a time when nature celebrates its greatest light. Attuning to this transition allows you to synchronize your inner energy with nature’s outward expansion, encouraging you to “shine your light” and embrace creativity.

This month, I explore how tending to our relationship with light, essential oils, flower essences, and aroma can help us return to a deeper state of harmony and internal coherence during the Summer Solstice.

Solstice Celebration, Gratitude, and Light

For centuries, people around the world have honored this day as a time of gratitude, celebration, and reflection. The sun reaches its highest point in the sky, illuminating the world around us. Spiritually, it invites us to recognize the light within ourselves.

The Summer Solstice signifies the year’s most expansive moment—the longest day and brightest point.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the solstice occurs when Earth’s axis is at its maximum tilt toward the sun, marking the brightest point in natural light. This illumination underscores the deep connection between the sun’s cycles and light, spanning astronomical phenomena, spiritual symbolism, and ancient architecture.

As we enter a season of growth, expression, and outward progress, we can use this solar energy to support our goals, enhance self-awareness, and appreciate the beauty of just being alive.

Whether you’re enjoying the greater outdoors, meditating in the sun, tending your garden, or quietly journaling your thoughts, let your solstice rituals be rooted in intention and gratitude.

Additionally, the solstice encourages us to embrace our true selves, acknowledge our progress, and lay the groundwork for what’s ahead.

Summer Solstice & Biological Coherence

The world has become loud, bombarding us with news of conflict, narrow advice, and never-ending content.

But coherence doesn’t happen in noise — It happens in the presence of light. We are light beings. We have an immense communication network of light that operates throughout the body.

Light is one of the primary ways the environment communicates with our biology. Every sunrise, every moment outdoors, and every spectrum of natural light carries information that helps organize our circadian rhythms, mitochondrial function, hormones, mood, and energy.

Summer Solstice is a reminder that we are made of light, growth, and becoming. We observe this phenomenon, which is directly tied to the changing daylight hours throughout the year and carries deep historical and cultural significance.

Our biology is naturally attuned to the sun. Sunlight and seasonal illumination drive fundamental biological processes. The connection between the solar cycle, light exposure, and our biology extends across various aspects of life, from daily patterns to quantum phenomena.

As the light bathes the world, it also illuminates the soul.

Harnessing Light During Solstice

The sun remains the optimal source for red and infrared light. Exposure to natural sunlight in the morning (when UV levels are low) benefits the skin, eyes, and overall systemic metabolism.

Longer daylight hours serve as a strong signal to the nervous system. During peak light periods, such as the Summer Solstice, our nervous system takes in the extra light. It is fine-tuning quantum biological processes involved in ‘light harvesting.’

The Heart’s Electromagnetic Coherence

From the heart’s massive electromagnetic coherence to the symphony of biological activity within the body to the elements surrounding us, coherence is the conductor of health, consciousness, and healing.

The Eyes Have It

One of the ways light guides our biology is through our eyes. Photoreceptors in the eyes and light-sensitive cells throughout the body signal the brain to adjust circadian rhythms, reduce nighttime melatonin production, and increase neurotransmitter levels such as serotonin and dopamine.

Exposure to natural light early in the day is essential, triggering healthy pulses of cortisol that give you natural energy and synchronize your biological clock. Biologically, morning light triggers your natural cortisol spike for daytime energy, while evening light helps your circadian rhythm adjust, preparing your body to produce melatonin for deep sleep.

In the evening, the low-angle sunlight, shifting from yellow to orange, shields your eyes from the disruptive artificial blue light. Watching a sunset can help calibrate your circadian rhythm, making it easier to wind down.

Skin Receptors

Sun exposure naturally aligns with the body’s internal clock, suggesting a direct pathway from sun exposure to vibrant physical energy. The method we use to harness sunlight involves the light receptors in our skin. These receptors are part of the endocrine system that influences the production and regulation of adrenal and thyroid hormones.

Morning sunlight, particularly during peak seasons, is most effective for absorbing ultraviolet light, which helps regulate immune and inflammatory responses. Ultraviolet rays convert cholesterol in the skin into Vitamin D3, which research confirms acts as a direct co-factor for seasonal stamina.

We thrive when we live in tune with nature’s cycles. Aligning routines with the natural patterns of light and changing seasons helps us feel more balanced. For example, waking up with the sunrise or limiting blue light from screens and TV in the evening supports our natural rhythms.

As we move toward the Summer Solstice, we enter a season of illumination.

Morning Light Vitality

Once a year, the sun rises earlier and sets later than on any other day. This increased daylight provides more biological signals and natural energy, offering a compelling reason to try something new. It doesn’t require a complete life overhaul—just a single day to approach with a bit more intention.

On the solstice, the sun reaches its highest point of the year. That is objectively remarkable. Starting the day with a single moment of perspective costs nothing and compounds quietly over time. I encourage you to seize the opportunity to harness the morning light’s illumination.

  1. Go outside within 10 minutes of waking. Even a short time on your porch or front step can make a difference. The main factor is exposure to light, not the amount of time spent outside.
  2. Skip the phone for the first 20 minutes. Reactive mornings—ones that start with news, social media, or notifications—hand over your first hour of attention to other people’s priorities. Give yourself one protected window before the world comes in.
  3. Greet the sun as it rises. The solstice sunrise is among the earliest of the year, occurring before 6 a.m. in most of the U.S. You don’t need to turn it into a tradition—glance up for a moment and let the sunlight touch your face.
  4. Say out loud one specific thing you’re grateful for. Make it specific rather than performative. For example, “I am grateful for the songbird’s melody.” That specific detail generates the emotional response that makes gratitude practice work.
  5. Stand tall and stretch for five minutes before you sit anywhere. Gentle movement in the morning improves circulation, lowers cortisol, and signals the body to shift from rest to alert mode, without requiring anything of you beyond a few minutes.
  6. Take one minute to look at the sky before the morning gets going. Can you see the horizon? Are there clouds? What colors does the sky have? Name what you can see.

The hallmark of the summer solstice is that it is the year’s longest day. It brings extra daylight, allowing you to stay outside longer. Sunset is the ideal time to honor the light within and without, and the chance to witness the sun at its highest point in the sky all year.

Our Summer Solstice Ritual will take place at sunset.

Essential Oils: Plant Light Alchemy

Like us, nature intricately weaves itself into the biology of our planet. Plants play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance and are intimately linked to human wellbeing.

Botanical essential oils capture the literal and metaphorical essence of the sun. They are aromatic, volatile, highly concentrated liquids containing hundreds of distinct chemical compounds.

As the most powerful part of the plant, botanical essential oils and extracts have shaped human history since time immemorial. People have used them medicinally to kill viruses, bacteria, and fungi.

They provide exquisite fragrances that balance mood, lift spirits, dispel negative emotions, and create a romantic atmosphere. Essential oils can even stimulate tissue and nerve regeneration. They can also carry nutrients to the cells.

Sunlight drives secondary metabolism. Light-harvesting pathways in plants that produce essential oils (primarily chlorophylls and carotenoids) power photosynthesis and generate the precursors plants use to build and concentrate essential oils. Thus, essential oils contain the most concentrated expressions of the plant’s life force.

Since plants produce their oils using solar energy, the quality, spectrum, and intensity of light they receive during their growth cycle significantly affect the yield and chemical profile of an essential oil. The plant’s chemotype depends entirely on where it grows. Altitude and varying light conditions throughout aromatic plant cultivation directly affect yield and the composition (chemotype) of their essential oils.

Inhaling them is considered a physical and energetic consumption of concentrated sunlight. When we inhale their aromas, they activate the olfactory bulb in our brain, which directly affects the limbic system—the emotional processing center. This connects physical scent with emotional illumination, aiding in mood shifts, mental resets, and seasonal transitions.

Flower Essences: Carriers of Light & Vibration

Light’s invisible intelligence, in the form of photons, electrons, protons, ions, and phonons from sound, set against the backdrop of water and flowers, informs vibrational essences, our biology, and our state of health.

Flower essences are vibrational remedies prepared by solar infusion, in which flowers are infused in water to capture their energetic imprint. They are colorless, odorless liquid infusions made from a variety of natural sources, including plants, the ocean, rocks, and the mineral kingdom.

The environment imprints its own vibration, recognized by the power vortices around the planet. Thus, vibrational essences embody and carry the vibrational signature of the whole plant and the environment from which they come.

Often described as “carriers of light,” they are made through intentional ritual and meditation, which transmit the energy signature to the spring water via sunlight. Water and a natural preservative (such as brandy) serve as physical vessels for transferring subtle, high-frequency botanical light and life force directly to the human energy field.

Like homeopathy, flower essences are classified as “vibrational” or “subtle energy” medicine, which integrates influences on the subtle bodies and the etheric properties of the anatomy.

To capture a flower or plant’s distinctive energy pattern, we harness light from the morning sun or moon and transfer it to spring water. This light acts as a catalyst, transferring the plant’s life force and vibrational energy into the water. The water is then preserved with organic brandy and used as an energetic remedy. This process, also known as solarization, imprints the plant’s energetic signature and “light frequency” into the water.

Living Essences of Australia

Flower Essence Therapy is an ancient healing discipline that has its oldest known living tradition with the Nyoongah Aboriginal people of the South West of Australia. Their oral tradition stretches back to the last ice age and encompasses knowledge of the non-herbal uses of flowers.

Aboriginal peoples have practiced flower essence therapy for thousands of years. Grounded in their ancient traditions, they serve as caretakers of this beautiful environment and as holders of healing wisdom

In our formulas, we use living wildflower essences from Western Australia, a state renowned for its wildflowers. Rarely, anywhere in the world, can an entire landscape be transformed by an event so surreal and beautiful as WA’s wildflower season.

The unique, luminous quality of light in Western Australia is defined by its intensity, clarity, and rich golden hues, which result from the Southern Hemisphere’s higher UV levels and low atmospheric pollution.

The high-intensity sunlight and ancient, nutrient-poor soils in Western Australia have driven native wildflowers to evolve striking pigments, papery bracts, and distinctive UV-reflecting patterns to attract local pollinators. The pristine, unpolluted air makes these colors appear exceptionally vibrant and luminous.

The Noongar believe there is a connection between the wildflowers, us, and the spirit world. As with all life, they are intimately interconnected with the sacred oneness of all that lives and breathes, even all that is animate and inanimate.

Flower essences, also known as vibrational essences, can be helpful for emotional and mental tension. They work by breaking old patterns, which can support healing and bring more balance to a person’s life. Because they have no plant-based chemicals or scent, they are a good option for both children and older adults.

The Captivating Lotus

Blue waterlily (also known as Blue Lotus) oil, known to ancient Egyptians as the “Flower of the Sun.” As you can see from the geometric symmetry of its bloom below, its captivating energy reflects our human potential for illumination.

The rare absolute extracted from this delicate blue waterlily is closely associated with spiritual illumination and meditation, symbolizing rebirth, clarity, and the peak of solar energy’s bloom.

This beautiful Anointing Oil also contains an array of Australian wildflower essences, vibrational Awakening, and Gateway Ritual Essences, which gently assist the spiritual aspirant in connecting with their own illumination and unconditional love. Gateway Ritual Essence, in particular, is one I use to cross the threshold of the season during the solstice and the equinox.

Solstice Ritual of Illumination

Atara Illumination Sacred Anointing Oil is the ideal sensory companion for your Summer Solstice celebrations, serving as a powerful tool for anointing and ritual. It is often used in ceremonies to awaken the third eye, clear mental tension, and set summer intentions.

Summer solstice intentions resonate with a season of expansion and abundance. You’re setting your goals during nature’s peak and nurturing them amid the long, vibrant days of summer. This connection with the seasonal rhythm of light helps your intentions take root deeply and thrive.

Our sense of smell connects directly to the limbic brain – the emotional center – making aromatherapy one of the most powerful tools for emotional anchoring and behavioral change. When you pair Atara Illumination with a focused intention, you activate neural pathways that support consistent and subconscious reinforcement.

To make your intentions stick, we anchor them in a multi-sensory ritual.

To prepare:

  • Choose a time of day (sunset is best) to devote at least 15 minutes. The solstice sunset happens between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. across most of the U.S.
  • Create a sacred space where you won’t be disturbed.
  • Mark the shift from afternoon to evening with something intentional. A changed outfit. A cup of tea made slowly. A short walk. A glass of water.
  • Decide on one meaningful area to focus your intention: courage, rest, creativity, confidence, or anything that holds personal significance.
  • Write down your intention,
  • Visualize your goals for the next half of the year taking shape or being harvested, energized by light.
  • Have with you a glass of spring water and a piece of fruit such as an apricot, plum, peach, nectarine, watermelon, or cherry.

At the solstice sunset hour:

  • Remove any eyeglasses or sunglasses.
  • Anoint yourself with Atara Sacred Anointing Oil.
  • Pause with your eyes closed, take a few deep breaths, smelling Atara.
  • Holding your intention in mind, breathe deeply and allow Atara’s vibratory illumination to penetrate your senses.
  • Open your eyes and look west with a soft gaze toward the sun.
  • Be attuned to nature around you – the sounds of the breeze, birds, children’s laughter in the distance, or its silence.
  • Acknowledge your presence on this longest day, and be with this moment of magical transition.
  • Hold a glass of water up to toast the sun. See the sun dance with your water.
  • Verbally declare your summer solstice intention aloud.
  • Sip the water energized by the longest rays of the sun and your intention.
  • Feel the subtle vibration within as you hold the water in your mouth for a moment.
  • Sense your body absorbing light, water, and intention, and remember your connection to this light.
  • Take your time and stay fully present with your entire experience.
  • Eat the piece of fruit you’ve selected. Experience its flavor, appreciate its texture, and relish its aftertaste.
  • Finish your ritual by gently anointing your forehead and heart with Atara. Take a few deep, calming breaths to feel centered and renewed.

A Summer Solstice Blessing

Finally, pause briefly and bring your awareness to your heart, with your palms on your chest, as you acknowledge that your ultimate authority resides in your awareness of yourself as a being of light.

  • Pause, inhale, then speak aloud your words of gratitude for the privilege of witnessing the solstice sunset.
  • Finish by repeating the following blessing slowly:

“I welcome the light within me.

I celebrate all that light has given me.

I open myself to greater joy, clarity, and purpose.

I honor my inner fire, and step boldly into the fullness of who I am becoming.

May my light benefit all beings.”

Celebrate Your Illumination!

As the light bathes the world, it also illuminates your soul. This is the exciting moment when we move from the light of day into evening. Participating in this ritual to honor the transition into summer marks a profound shift from the gentle renewal of spring to a period of peak vitality, growth, and illumination, and to an active engagement with the world of light around us.

  • Give the evening its own pace. On the longest day of the year, there’s a temptation to keep going because the light says you still can. Resist it. Let the evening slow down rather than fill up.
  • Write one sentence about today. For example, “Today I watched the solstice sunset, and I felt…” The habit of marking days is what separates a year that felt meaningful from one that blurred.
  • Write down one insight this day clarified for you. Something today’s slower pace surfaced that the week’s noise usually buries. Carry it into tomorrow.
  • Welcome the sweetness of sleep. By understanding how your body processes the solstice light that fosters biological coherence, you’ve become a mindful partner with yourself.
  • Tomorrow, repeat what worked. The summer solstice is one day. What makes it matter is whether it becomes a habit you carry into the rest of the season. That’s how a good day becomes a good summer.
  • The week after the solstice, use Atara Illumination daily to reinforce your solstice intention and anchor your solstice experience, fostering biological coherence.

Enjoy the Expansive Light of Summer

The solstice highlights that the light shining on Earth also resides within us. The life force animating nature flows through our bodies, and the same intelligence that orchestrates the changing seasons guides our transformation and offers insights you may take into the fall equinox.

Perhaps the greatest lesson of the summer solstice is that it is not simply about receiving more energy. It is about becoming aware of the energy of illumination and feeling the presence of sacred light you already carry within.

We are invited to cherish both our outward growth and inner wisdom, celebrating our successes and moments of stillness, while also embracing action and surrender. Genuine harmony comes not from picking one over the other but from finding a beautiful balance between both.

I encourage you to make time to enjoy the longer summer daylight hours in both the morning and evening. Explore outdoors, take walks, and, if you’re inclined, go on hikes in nature, where you can follow paths to discover new sights and smells.

Spend time under the stars. The summer night skies are spectacular for viewing the glowing summer full moons and the Milky Way. Check the dates for the upcoming full moons—including the June 29th Strawberry Moon, July’s Buck Moon, and August’s Sturgeon Moon—which put on brilliant nighttime illumination shows.

Throughout the summer, include a variety of seasonal plant-based foods, such as fresh salads and fruits, to support ongoing digestion and nutrient absorption. This helps your gut microbiome better manage and convert light energy.

When nature flourishes with warmth and energy vital for life, your solstice light reaches deep into your heart, filling it with living gratitude.

May your biological coherence this summer be filled with illumination, joy, and magic!

Happy Summer Solstice!

All my aromatic Love,

Vidya
