Description
“Praśānta” is a Sanskrit term that refers to a state of calmness in both body and mind. Many of us strive to achieve this state but often find it difficult in our daily lives. Calming ourselves can be tough, as the fast pace of life makes it hard to slow down and appreciate the moment.
Stress is a feeling we experience when we become overwhelmed and struggle to cope with the demands of life, whether those demands are real or imagined. Often, the first signs that we are out of balance appear when we feel exhausted, anxious, worn out, and stretched thin.
All types of stress accumulate, and when they become persistent, they can overwhelm the nervous system. Physical, emotional, and mental stressors are processed similarly at the cellular level.
Overwhelm occurs when people experience worry, fear for their safety and security, try to manage too many responsibilities, or procrastinate in meeting deadlines. Mentally, it can manifest as confusion, unclear thinking, and scattered attention. Emotionally, it may present as irritation, anxiety, fear, a sense of defeat, and feelings of helplessness.
It is often experienced as discomfort in the stomach, tightness in the neck and shoulders, tension headaches, lethargy, and exhaustion. This overload maintains activation of the sympathetic nervous system, preventing it from calming down. If left unaddressed, chronic stress can significantly impact daily life, leading to more severe and long-lasting symptoms.
While you may not always have control over the circumstances around you, you can always choose how to respond and what to make of each difficult situation. Incorporating holistic lifestyle strategies, such as deep breathing, resting, and eating well, can help you destress and lead a more balanced and calm life.
Remember, a calm mind is a stress-free mind. Practicing kindness and compassion towards yourself, learning to say “no” to excessive demands, and prioritizing quiet moments for your own well-being are essential skills to develop for a fulfilling life.
