This Ritual Essence was made in Pu’uhonua o Honaunau, the ancestral land for a Place of Refuge on the rugged south Kona coast. It is considered one of the most sacred places on the Big Island. Lono, the God of Life, protects this spiritual sanctuary.
In ancient times, these grounds were regarded to possess extraordinary mana (spiritual power). Traditionally available only to the ali’i, the royal monarchy and their families, and those serving them, it was forbidden to anyone else. After death, the ali’i bones were stored and protected in Hale o Keawe, the heiau (temple).
Surrounded by a great wall, Pu’uhonua served as a “place of refuge” for those who broke kapu, the sacred laws and beliefs embedded in ethical codes, punishable by death. The only hope for survival was to escape and make your way by swimming through shark-infested water, climbing across the sharp, rugged lava shore to reach safety in the Pu’uhonua. Upon reaching the place of refuge, the person who broke the kapu would be pardoned by the Kahuna and given a second chance at life. Today, the Pu’uhonua continues to serve as a refuge for all peoples.

This powerful essence is infused with the spirit of refuge, safety, and charity. It has a powerful spiritual vibration of mercy, connectivity, repentance, forgiveness, and reconciliation, ultimately restoring self-love and balance.
Use Refuge Ritual Essence to accept and forgive yourself for any mistakes or transgressions and begin anew to ‘set things right.’ Direct the following prayer toward yourself with your eyes closed, feeling it resonate deep inside your being:
